CropsThe Gateway Area is predominantly a mixed farm area of approximately eight hundred and fifty farms. The total area exceeds 623,566 acres for what is classified as rolling plains. Main grains include: wheat, canola, barley, oats, winter wheat and fall rye. The average farm size is approximately 765 acres in size, with about fifty percent of the farms with cattle. Forty two percent of the farm operators are over the age of fifty years. For the most part, crops grown in the area are traditional, with spring wheat being the mainstay. Approximately sixty percent of all seeded acres in the area are sown to this crop. Some barley and oats are grown, with small amounts of the barley crop being sold for malting barley. There is a minimal amount of fall rye and winter wheat grown in the R.M. of Moosomin. Oilseed crops such as canola, flax and mustard are grown. Most of the livestock producers have forage crops in production to provide winter feed their stock. A wide range of legume and grass varieties are grown in the area, which is largely self sufficient forage crop production.
LivestockThe Gateway Area is predominantly a mixed farm area of approximately eight hundred and fifty farms. The total area exceeds 623,566 acres for what is classified as rolling plains. Beef cattle are the primary livestock enterprise, with small amounts of dairy, hogs, horses, poultry, bees, sheep and goats. Cow-calf operations are dominant in the beef area, with a few feedlot operations in existence. A large number of the farms in the Gateway Area are mixed farms - raising both livestock and grain. Many of these farms have moderate-sized herds of cattle raised to balance the farm income between livestock and grain. Some rather large herds are handled by a few producers with a good number of these operations specializing in a specific breed of cattle. There are several purebred producers in the area who not only raise these breeds, but show them at various livestock shows in Saskatchewan. Other livestocks, such as hogs, chickens, chinchilla, fallow deer, elk, buffalo and sheep, have very moderate production in the area. In addition, several dairy farms operate in the region.
