Village of Welwyn

Welcome to Welwyn!

History of Welwyn

Since the village was fairly close to Fort Ellice, men from Eastern Canada were in and around the Welwyn area well before the land surveys of 1880-1881. The village of Welwyn is located on the NWT-35 T-15 R-30 W-1st. It orginiated in 1903, when the Canadian Pacific Railway (Pheasant Hills Branch) was built. Theis settlement was first called Welwyn Station. Welwyn School opened in 1887 at what is known as Old Welwyn. The Old Welwyn Post Office was first opened in 1884; the village of Welwyn post office was established in 1903. Three elevator companies had buildings in Welwyn.

Several different stores, livery barns, implement dealer garages, and blacksmith shops were found in the town over the years. The Empire Hotel operated from 1903 to 1919, as well as various cafes, barbershops and hair dressing establishments. Agriculture was the dominant base of the Welwyn area and still is the dominating influence today. The Potash mine at Rocanville has employed several local people over the past years. Welwyn is still an active community with an excellent new skating rink and curling rink complex. The curling rink has artificial ice and the building has a large area usable for banquets, dances, meetings, etc. The population of the village remains at approximately one hundred and ten people.
