Town of Moosomin
History of MoosominAlthough Moosomin was not incorporated as a town until November 1887, settlement began in the area with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1882. First known as Siding No. 4 and the Moosomin Station, early businesses were established and by 1884 the town had grown to include five general stores, five hotels, two livery stables, two blacksmiths, a doctor, lawyer, butcher, and one printer, among others. The name "Moosomin" has sparked some argument as to its origin. It was first thought to be from the Cree word Moosomina, which means "moose-berries", which have been found locally. For many years it was then thought to mean "crossing of the trails" (Moose Mountain and Wood Mountain trails did cross here during fur trading days). Finally, it was settled in 1981 when the following information was found in the Archives: "Moosomin, named after the Indian Chief" by an engineer of the CPR, quoted in The Herald (Battleford, NWT), July 11, 1882. The Cree Chief Moo-soo-min lived in the Battleford area but was known far and wide as a peacemaker. Regardless of the name controversy, the town grew quickly in size. The R.D. McNaughton Company became a popular store for the surrounding area. John McGuirl established the Moosomin Planing Mill and became a well-known furniture builder. Moosomin had several military units associated with the community, including the 16th Light Horse in the early 1900s; the 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles, 1915; the 217 Infantry Battalion and 101st Battery of the 22nd Regiment were based at the Moosomin Armories (present Elks Hall). The town also had a jail (Moosomin Goal, located at the site of present day Turpie Brothers farm), a normal school (teacher's training) and, in earlier days, was even home of the Legislative Assembly for the District of Assiniboia. A hospital - the only one between Brandon, MB and Indian Head - was opened in 1905. Moosomin's World-Spectator is the oldest surviving weekly newspaper in Saskatchewan, having evolved from the combination of several printing enterprises started in the town. Moosomin has had many financial institutions, including the locally created Moosomin Savings and Credit Union, which began in 1940 and now has branches in Rocanville, Spy Hill, and Wawota. Although the town relies mostly on the fortunes of its agricultural base, it is also home for employees of PCS Rocanville, Trans-Canada Pipelines, Saskatchewan Government employees, and several other large employers. There are several oil fields in the immediate area as well. The usual agri-businesses are found in Moosomin too. Recreation in the region dates back to 1886, with the foxhunts organized by the local hunt clubs. Moosomin boasts a Curling Club that dates back all the way to the 1880s. Hockey, baseball, football, and cricket were all parts of the early scene. In 1963, Moosomin Regional Park came into being. Moosomin also has a new sports area, Bradley Park, and many other fine recreation facilities. The town's population has remained contant at approximately two thousand, five hundred over the past several years.
